How Should We Revise the Paratactic Theory?

چکیده
That is to say, the surface form of indirect speech is itself paratactic and requires only the insertion of a period (‘a tiny orthographic change ... without semantic significance’, as Davidson put it) to be made explicit. If SF is true, then the ‘that’ of ‘says that’ is, grammatically speaking, a demonstrative, and the utterance to which it refers is just the reporter’s utterance of the words immediately following it.2 Early objectors to PT tended to attack LF directly, arguing that it did not yield a satisfactory account of the truth conditions of indirect speech reports. Defenders of PT usually found ways of answering, or at least of dodging, these objections and the theory survived and prospered. More recent critics, however, have concentrated their fire upon SF, and this flanking attack may ultimately prove more damaging for PT. The case against SF is strong. In an elegant 1986 paper, Segal and Speas marshalled a range of evidence, all tending to show that, from a grammatical point of view, the ‘that’ of ‘says that’ is a complementizer, not a demonstrative

You Can Say That Again
t has been two decades since the publication of Davidson’s twin papers, I “Truth and Meaning” (1967) and “On Saying That” (1968). The first proposed that a Tarskian truth theory for a language L can be (the heart of) a theory of meaning for L. The second proposed a radically novel approach, the paratactic account, to the logical form of indirect discourse. The two proposals are related in a num...
متن کاملIndirect Discourse : Parataxis , the Propositional Function Modification
In “On Saying That,” Donald Davidson offered an analysis of indirect discourse that was meant to overcome the classic difficulties of a semantic theory of indirect discourse. Additionally, Davidson’s treatment of indirect discourse was purported to further his project of explaining meaning in a purely extensional, explicitly truth-defined, and compositional manner. The particular paratactic the...
متن کاملFair Processes for Priority Setting: Putting Theory into Practice; Comment on “Expanded HTA: Enhancing Fairness and Legitimacy”
Embedding health technology assessment (HTA) in a fair process has great potential to capture societal values relevant to public reimbursement decisions on health technologies. However, the development of such processes for priority setting has largely been theoretical. In this paper, we provide further practical lead ways on how these processes can be implemented. We first present the misconce...
متن کاملIs Just War Theory Obsolete?
Just War Theory can be found in almost all major cultures. But since war was a business that could not be easily stopped, some aimed to constrain it. In its classic form, Just War Theory has been around for several centuries—ever since nationhood in Europe replaced provincial governments. Having made some introductory considerations, I will ask: should Just War Theory be left as it is, changed,...
